The Capitol Hill Neighborhood Council is looking for community members to join its Board of Directors, with a special election of directors to be held during the community meeting on July 15, 2026 at 6 PM. Whether you have lived here for decades or just moved in, this is your chance to pull up a chair, share your voice, and help shape our community.
The Board of Directors provides oversight and strategic vision for the organization. While the right to take a position on issues lies with the community itself, the work to educate and inform residents, engage community members, and create a meaningful public forum lies with the board and its committees. Board members work together to make space to educate, engage, and unite residents through inclusive dialogue and community programs, and we need your help to make the magic happen.
Why get involved?
- No Board Experience Required. Seriously! You don’t need a background in local government, public infrastructure, or rules of order. Current board members work in offices, laboratories, rideshares, and everything in between! We value fresh perspectives, diverse backgrounds, and commitment to community, whatever that looks like.
- Wear Many Hats. Our board members serve in a variety of capacities. Whether you are passionate about local safety, neighborhood planning, community events, or keeping people connected and informed, there is a place for your vision and talents and a chance to learn and grow alongside neighbors.
- Representation. We want our board to reflect the real community of Capitol Hill. Your unique voice is needed to guide our approach to community-centered engagement.
Requirements & Commitments
Qualifications. The Capitol Hill Neighborhood Council boundaries include everything in Salt Lake City limits from North Temple on the south between I-15 and City Creek Canyon. Anyone 18 and older who lives in those boundaries is eligible to join the board, as well as certain leaders of businesses and organizations in the community.
Time. In all, being part of the board involves about 5-10 hours a month of meetings and other volunteer work across the board and at least one committee. Expect to spend up to 5 hours a month on board tasks, plus additional time that depends on which committee you choose and the assignments you take on.
Time for board tasks breaks down approximately as follows:
- Emails and meeting preparation take up to one hour each month, keeping up with neighborhood updates and reviewing materials in advance so we can use meeting time efficiently
- The board meeting lasts about two hours and is currently on the second Wednesday of each month at 6 PM. At least half of board members must be present for decisions to be made, so consistent attendance is expected. However, up to five absences in a year (with advance notice) are allowed.
- The community meeting is up to two hours, held the third Wednesday of each month at 6 PM. This is the primary opportunity to connect directly with community members, listen to feedback, and report on updates from council leadership.
Supporting a committee. Beyond the core board activities, you will join at least one committee that aligns with your skills or interests. Committees are where the grassroots work gets done, supporting a special activity or hashing out a proposal together with your neighbors.
- Currently, committees meet for one to two hours a month, depending on the committee. Work you do outside of committee meetings is up to you and the time you have to give.
- Review our committee charters to get a sense of the activities and projects each committee is focused on.

- A brief bio (up to 150 words) introducing yourself, how long you’ve lived in the area, why you’re interested in joining the board, etc. (to be shared with community members)
- Any strengths or interests you bring to the table, or any particular area you are passionate about (to help the Chair and board members determine where you might be the best fit after election)
- A current headshot, if available (to be shown during the July 15 meeting if you are absent and to be posted with the board roster after election)
